A new brief from the UCSF Center for Health Equity focuses on trends in depression and anxiety symptoms during and after pregnancy in California, using data from the Maternal and Infant Health Assessment.

Maternal mental health conditions are increasing. More people reported experiencing either depression or anxiety symptoms during or after pregnancy in 2024 (37%) than in 2020 (33%). Fewer than half of those who have depression or anxiety symptoms receive mental health treatment.

Building on a recently released report on maternal mental health, Supporting the Mental Health of California Mothers, the brief provides strategies for improving maternal mental health, including addressing the root causes of mental health conditions, increasing screening and treatment, and strengthening California's mental health workforce.
