New research brief quantifies inequities in everyday maternity care for Black people giving birth in California.

Only 54.6% experienced optimal person-centered care during childbirth in 2023 — meaning they felt listened to, respected, clearly informed, and included in decisions. More than 1 in 5 reported being pressured, ignored, treated unfairly, or spoken to rudely during birth.

Why it matters: Black women who experienced respectful, person-centered care were less likely to report anxiety or depression and more likely to attend postpartum visits and breastfeed.

Improving communication and shared decision-making isn’t just good practice — it’s linked to better health.
