A new brief from the UCSF Center for Health Equity focuses on screening for depression and anxiety symptoms during and after pregnancy in California, using representative data from the 2020-2024 Maternal and Infant Health Assessment.

Mental health conditions are common; over 37% of women experience depression or anxiety symptoms during or after pregnancy. Screening for mental health conditions both during and after pregnancy is important for identifying those who may need treatment, but only two-thirds of California women are screened both during and after pregnancy.

Building on a recently released report on maternal mental health, Supporting the Mental Health of California Mothers, the brief provides strategies for increasing universal screening, reducing barriers to screening for California’s diverse maternity population, and improving monitoring data.
